LOOP: An innovative, student-driven ratings and review site for colleges and schools. Launching in October 2014, LOOP is a new student-driven ratings and review site which has been developed in partnership with a group of colleges and sixth forms. LOOP is a result of collaborative work with students and staff from the following institutions in London and other regions: South Thames College l Havering Sixth Form l Westminster Kingsway College l Tower Hamlets College l LeSoCo l Barking & Dagenham College l Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College l Brooke House Sixth Form l King Edward VI College, Stourbridge l Hereward College of Further Education l South Gloucestershire and Stroud College LOOP is a social enterprise and is co-directed by a board of student-advocates recruited from partner colleges. It has been set up by the SHM Foundation, as a part of our wider strategy to promote active citizenship among young people in Britain.

Why LOOP?
In today’s world, whether you are looking for a hotel, film or a book, you can find out what other people are saying about it online. Yet, in relation to education, there is no dedicated space where people can go to find out what students really think about their colleges and schools. Within education, there has been a culture of ‘tick box’ consultation which has become discredited in the eyes of students and staff. In most institutions, a small number of hyper-engaged students tend to dominate the student voice, while the large majority remains silent.

Traditional consultation formats are old and tired, and they fail to tap into the online social media culture which dominates young people’s lives. LOOP is a direct response to these challenges. It enables students to become active commentators on the way their education is delivered, and to play a role in formulating decisions about improvement. Over the next 2 years, it aims to become the destination site for access to the most authentic and balanced feedback available on schools and colleges.

How does LOOP work?
LOOP is an innovative, accessible web platform which allows students to find and review their institutions easily and quickly. The site is carefully managed and all reviews are pre-moderated to ensure they are constructive.

Key features are:

LOOP training and resources equip students with valuable skills in constructive feedback and decision-making.

Students are asked to consider and give star ratings on a wide range of areas including teaching quality, support, employability, and facilities.

Institutions can manage their own profile page by adding logos and links. They can also respond to student reviews.

LOOP asks students to provide balanced, constructive comments about what works well in their institution and the potential solutions for improvement.

Institutions get regular notifications of their latest reviews and can extract quantitative and qualitative data from the site. LOOP can also provide institutions with a detailed, in-depth end-of-year report.
